Considerations before site visit

  • What orientation is your roof? Solar PV works best with a South, S/E or S/W facing roof, East or West facing roofs are often suitable as well, however North, N/E or N/W roofs are not suitable.

  • Are there any trees or buildings overlooking roof? Shading can reduce the output from the solar modules considerably and will need to be considered at design stage, some obstacles such as waste stacks for example can be relocated by ourselves.

  • Do you live in a conservation area? Although solar PV is not required to have planning permission under permitted development rights, listed buildings and conservation areas will require this on a case by case basis.

  • Have you discussed with neighbours? Although not essential it is wise to discuss with adjoining properties to mitigate any possible party wall disputes later.

  • Is your roof and tiles in good condition? Your roof timbers and tiles will need to be in acceptable condition to allow fitting of modules.
